Dust Storm - This Could Save Your Live
I was recently in a dust storm, and I didn't know what to do. These are some best practices that you may take during a dust storm.
**Dust Storms and Haboobs: What You Need to Know**
Dust storms and haboobs can occur anywhere in the United States but are most common in the Southwest. Haboobs form due to thunderstorm outflow winds, which can kick up large amounts of dust and drastically reduce visibility. If a dust storm is occurring in your area, your National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office will issue a Dust Storm Warning.
**Motorists Beware!**
Dust storms often appear suddenly as an advancing wall of dust and debris, miles long and several thousand feet high. They strike with little warning, creating extremely hazardous driving conditions. The blinding, choking dust can cause rapid visibility loss and lead to severe accidents, often involving chain collisions. Although dust storms usually last only a few minutes, the actions you take during one can be crucial for your safety.
**Dust Storm Safety Tips:**
1. If you see dense dust blowing across or approaching a roadway, pull your vehicle off the pavement as far as possible.
2. Stop, turn off your lights, set the emergency brake, and take your foot off the brake pedal to ensure your tail lights are not illuminated.
3. Avoid entering the dust storm area if possible.
4. If you cannot pull off the roadway, proceed at a speed suitable for the visibility conditions, turn on your lights, and sound your horn occasionally.
5. Use the painted center line to guide you and look for a safe place to pull off the roadway.
6. Never stop on the traveled portion of the roadway.
**Lights Out!**
In the past, motorists driving in dust storms have pulled off the roadway but left their lights on. This can mislead other drivers who might follow the lights and accidentally collide with the parked vehicle. Always make sure all of your lights are off when you park off the roadway during a dust storm.

The Jackery Explorer 1000 is a battery generator which has 1000 Wh of power. This is an unboxing of the Jackery Explorer. One of the issues I see with this is that it's 1000 Wh for 24V, thus it's about 40 Ah battery.

I like it for the price point. I like my IC 7300. But for a little more money, the FT dX10 is probably the better value. that radio comes on sale often. Way better audio.

How do you update an existing memory with different settings - I tried selecting a memory, making minor changes (like CTCSS Tone) and then long pressing the A>M button, but it just deletes the memory and then switches to memory No1. Not useful.

You DON'T press a PTT without a matched antenna attached, Frank. It can damage or destroy the output stage of the radio. Take heed, beginners, this was a poor demonstration.

Why would I want to try a mobile setup with my MPAS? In south-central Texas, when Summer temps hit 95 to 100 degrees and humidity is so thick you can cut through it with a machete, working at one of the local parks is not an option when I am not in my Ham shack. If I can put up the 17-ft whip on a tri-mag mount, I can operate comfortably from the air-conditioned cab of my truck with one of my portable HF rigs.

I can use the up arrow on my keyboard and click all the way up to 24 seconds. (24) Most keyboards have the 4 direction keys on the right hand side. I hope this helps.

Good comments Frank. As hams we have been really spoiled with the choice of gorgeous SDRs for fixed and small portable use. But the gap for all band mobile is astounding and the 7100 although a nice radio has been out since 2012 (2016 for the IC-7300). So we are already 8 years into low cost SDR yet no new mobiles are available. That is why used prices are not high but stupid. My IC-7000 is still my best choice for HF mobile and I could sell it for what I paid used in 2014. 73 Peter

If the solar panel supply's enough power, does it charge the battery while the transceiver is receiving? It would have been good in the video if 1) the battery wasn't fully charged 2) you did some qso's (transmitted) while connected to a solar panel that delivers enough power to charge the battery and power the transceiver in receive mode. I assume it would switch to "float" when you transmit and charge when you're receiving.

    • @frankwc0o
      @frankwc0o Місяць тому

That’s a good point. This is when I was starting to understand what a solar controller can do. To run your radio, you must have a battery. That battery can be connected to the solar controller with or without a solar panel. If you’re connecting the radio to the solar controller, then you gotta make sure it’s capable of handling the wattage. For the buddy pole. It can take that much wattage. Thanks for the idea, I’ll create another video.
